It has been affirmed, by our family expert, that Duncan McKellar and our great-great-grandfather Archibald McKellar were not brothers, but first cousins.

The old parish record tells us that he never married. Donald is his brother. Margret is his sister.




Bear Creek McKellars

John McKellar, Kilmartin, m. Elizabeth “Effie” Black 1774
The McKellars from Kilmartin, Argyll settled in Aldborough Twp, Elgin Co. in 1818. Then Mosa Twp, Middlesex Co.

Children: Mary (died), Donald, Archibald, John, Peter, Dugald, Duncan, Neil, Mary. All born in Scotland.

Couple migrated in 1818 from Kilmichael-Glassary to Aldborough Twp, Elgin Co. then in 1828 Mosa Twp, Middlesex Co.

Arrived on ship ‘Mars’ with 4 other McKellar families. Became known as Bear Creek McKellars.

Became Baptists in 1798 before leaving Scotland.

Children married and settled in Mosa Twp., or Brooke Twp., Middlesex Co. but in 1855 son Duncan with wife and ten children moved to Ontonagan, Michigan, then in 1863 to Thunder Bay, Ontario, and finally Fort William, Ontario in 1886. Dugald also moved to Ontonagan, Michigan.
